Taiwan is an internal affair of China, says ambassador Sun Yuxi

The Chinese ambassador to India Sun Yuxi has once again reiterated the principle of ‘one China’ with regard to the question of independence of Taiwan. Addressing a press conference at the embassy today, Sun Yuxi said that Taiwan is China’s internal affair and is in “essence a struggle between the forces for and against division, and between the forces for and against ‘Taiwan independence’, and the focus is the struggle between one China and two Chinas”. The ambassador hopes that India would refrain from giving any wrong signal to Taiwan regarding its demand for independence from China.

The Chinese government has taken the ‘Taiwan Independence’ remarks made by the Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian very seriously. Recently China has also enacted the ‘anti-separation act’ which authorizes the military to use ‘non-peaceful means and other necessary measures’ against Taiwan. Chinese ambassador did not mince words and made it clear that China would not shy away from the use of violence on the Taiwan matter. On the deployment of missiles facing Taiwan he told that the moment China realize their futility they would be removed, but as of now they shall remain.

Sun Yuxi put it very categorically that “there is one China in the world, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China”. He believes it to be an objective reality that cannot be changed by anybody.
