Hate continues Down Under

An Indian student was targeted on Thursday for wearing a turban

Attacks on Indians continue in Australia even as condemnation pours in from the rest of the world. In the recent case, a 22-year-old Indian student was attacked and battered in Adelaide on Thursday after offensive comments were hurled at him for wearing a turban.

The student was assaulted in the busy market area of Rundle Mall. The Adelaide police said that Indian student was found in a critical condition with a broken nose. A 17-year-old youth was arrested by the police in this connection.

Earlier, Indian community leaders had asked students to stop protests on Australia's streets. They had declared that the motive of protests had been fulfilled. "The rallies have served their purpose and we don't want any more rallies in Harris Park," said Yadu Singh, coordinator of the Indian consul general's community committee on Indian students' issues. However, fresh attacks would certainly make Singh revise his opinion.

Meanwhile, former Australian wicket keeper and captain of the Deccan Chargers, Adam Gilchrist, encouraged Indian students to stay on in Australia. An ambassador of the University of Wollongong in Australia, Gilchrist said, "Australia has always been a good place for Indian students and Wollongong University welcomes a wide range of international students including Indians."

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, too, had urged Indian students to remain calm and exercise restraint. He had assured them a solution. Hardnews learnt that there have been more than 20 incidents of racial attacks on Indian students since May 23. And, the situation is only getting worse.
