Sarabjot Singh, son of Buta Singh, chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, was arrested on charges of corruption on Friday.

BJP has sought his dismissal. "Buta Singh had given a notice to take action against Patil. It is a case of open corruption and we demand that Mr Singh be removed from his post," senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde is reported to have said.

Sarabjot and his three accomplices were picked up from Delhi on Thursday after CBI received a tip-off about their alleged involvement in a case of bribery amounting to the tune of Rs 10,000,000.

The accused were questioned extensively by the anti-corruption bureau of the CBI after which they were arrested. "Sarabjot Singh alias Sweety has been arrested along with his three accomplices for allegedly demanding bribe from a Nashik-based contractor Ramrao Patil," CBI joint director, Rishiraj Singh, said.

The high-profile drama unfolded after Patil complained about Sarabjot asking him for money to close a case of financial bungling in which Patil is the main accused. Patil allegedly duped over 100 Dalits by drawing a loan of around Rs 10 crore in their names from a cooperative society. The case is pending in the commission of which Sarabjot's father, Buta Singh, is the chairman.

Meanwhile, Buta Singh has termed the incident as a political conspiracy to spoil his political career. He has refused to resign from his post.
