POSCO: An open letter to the Prime Minister

Appeal to immediately intervene in Jajpur, Kalinganagar and Jagatsingpur districts of Orissa where police and paramilitary forces are crushing India's non-violent democratic movements against forcible land accusation by Indian and foreign corporates. (Also, Jairam Ramesh's reply)

Kalinganagar and Paradip

Jairam Ramesh’s comment is very diplomatic. The South Korean PM’s visit on Republic Day was planned to inaugurate the construction work of Posco at Paradip. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was reportedly upset over the delay in handing over land to Posco. Naveen Patnaik rushed to Delhi on January 26, 2010 to pacify the Koreans. Posco’s attempts to explore possibilities in Jharkhand forced the hand of the Orissa government to act ruthlessly. If Ratan Tata could walk out of Gopalpur and Singur, why cannot he do the same in the case of Kalinganagar? Should Tata, Posco and Naveen Patnaik produce steel over the dead bodies of people? Who needs this blood-stained steel?

Against violence in Orissa

The Government of Orissa has provided ample proof of its being a true D-E-M-O-N-C-R-A-Z-Y, and there is no doubt left now in anyone’s mind of its true colours. The Government of India, by its quiet support on the issue, is also adding fuel to fire.
The Humanist Party of India opposes this violence against the poor tribals, who, by the Constitution, cannot be evicted from their traditional lands.

There is absolutely no reason for this violence other than the commitment of the governments towards their MNC bosses after having sold off the country to them.
We oppose this violence and call upon the people of India to follow in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi and take charge of the nation before it’s too late.

The movement against these killers must be through the path of non-violence and treating everyone equally as a human being.

It is time to end violence.
It is time to end the rule of the monopolies.
It is time to end the rule of the killers.
