New Delhi: BJP chief Amit Shah and Union Minister Smriti Irani today took oath as Rajya Sabha members. Mr Shah is making a debut in Parliament. The oath was administered by Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu in his Chamber. Both the BJP members were elected to the Upper House from Gujarat where polls were held this month. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad among others accompanied the two new members to the Chairman’s chamber.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court, by majority judgement, today declared the practice of triple talaq as unconstitutional. The judgement was delivered by a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India JS Khehar and comprising Justices R F Nariman, U U Lalit and Kurian Joseph and Abdul Nazir. The three judges said that the triple talaq was unconstitutional and un-Islamic. However, the two judges (Justice Nazeer and Justice  Kehar) gave a dissenting judgement. The apex court decision came on a bunch of petitions challenging the practice of triple talaq.

Thirteen coaches of Puri-Haridwar Kalinga Utkal Express train went off-track as carriages slammed into each other at Khatauli near Muzzafarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh on Saturday evening, killing 23 and injuring 156 people. The railway officials announced a compensation of Rs 3.5 lakh to the family of those killed and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured. A desperate search for survivors is underway. Though stern action has been taken against eight officials with immediate effect, the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.
